Family Garden

The Brief

Fix up this mess and make it a usable space!

This property had several issues to tackle. Access – typical of Wellington’s suburbs, it was steep and narrow, also there were some very old brick retaining walls that had become unsafe. There was very little flat land on this property that was usable. The brief was to fix or replace the retaining walls, improve access and usability of what was a very sunny and sheltered spot.

The Solution

By repairing and strengthening the existing brick walls we not only reduced costs but also retained a lot of the character of the property, this was an important aspect to the client. Many of the old bricks were re-used. In consultation with an engineer it was decided a new pole retaining wall would replace the old brick one. Backfilling the retaining wall formed a large flat lawn where once it was sloping and irregular. A series of landings, steps and a ramp took you from an existing deck down to the lawn. The materials that were chosen had to match the existing landscaping, and the style of the house.
